Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers: A Bond of Support Through Tragedy and Legacy
In a recent reflection on their careers and personal lives, Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers, stars of the popular detective series ‘Hart to Hart,’ shared how they leaned on each other during a particularly tragic period in their lives. In November 1981, Powers lost her longtime love, actor William Holden, who died from a fatal fall in his home at the age of 63. Just 17 days later, Wagner’s wife, actress Natalie Wood, drowned near Santa Catalina Island at the age of 43.
Despite these devastating losses, both actors found solace in their work and in each other. “We did — we leaned on each other for support,” Powers explained. “And we also understood that we had committed to do a television series…. It had to go on. The show had to go on, and no one would’ve understood that more than the partners we both lost.”
The pair played the roles of Jonathan and Jennifer Hart on ‘Hart to Hart,’ which aired from 1979 to 1984 and included eight subsequent TV movies. Their professional and personal bond has endured, with Powers describing their current relationship as “a very unusual and wonderful rapport.”
Powers also honored her late partner by founding the William Holden Wildlife Foundation (WHWF) in his memory. The nonprofit focuses on educating young people about the importance of environmental preservation and has educated thousands of students. Recently, Powers was among 25 individuals honored with the 2024 Agents of Change Award at the United Nations for her work.
Wagner, now 94, and Powers continue to cherish the memories of their time on ‘Hart to Hart’ and the support they provided each other during a very difficult period in their lives. Their legacy extends beyond their acting careers, highlighting the importance of friendship and commitment to their work and causes.
