LOS ANGELES, April 10, 2025 — Renowned rock album cover designer Ioannis Vasilopoulos passed away on April 7 at the age of 66. His family shared the news in a heartfelt obituary posted on an online tribute page, marking the end of an era for the music and art community.

In their statement, the family expressed their sorrow, saying, “We announce with heavy hearts the passing of Ioannis, our beloved artist, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, who has left us for the great beyond.” They added, “We find comfort knowing that Ioannis is reunited with his father, mother and other beloved family and friends. The outpouring of love for Ioannis and his work is also a great comfort.”

Ioannis, born in Athens, Greece, in 1958, emigrated to the United States in 1967. His passion for music and art led him to design album covers for some of the biggest names in rock history, including Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, and Skid Row. Over his prolific career, he created more than 350 album covers.

His family revealed that Ioannis was eager to continue his artistic journey, stating, “There were so many things Ioannis wanted to do and so many new projects he could not wait to share. As a family, we have been tasked to continue this work and that is what we are going to do. His energy will live on through his incredible art.”

The impact of his work extended beyond just album covers; Ioannis also contributed to various media projects, including directing music videos and collaborating with renowned recording companies like Sony Music and Universal Music. His designs shaped visual identities for an entire generation, making him a legendary figure in the music industry.

Several tributes to Ioannis poured in from fellow artists and fans. Patrick Prince, editor of Goldmine Magazine, remembered him fondly, saying, “Ioannis was a wonderfully generous person and a dear friend. His talent as an artist was limitless. He had more passion than any artist I’ve met and significantly cherished his work with rock and roll bands.”

The family noted his enduring spirit, stating, “His bright smile and child-like excitement live on in his works. Ioannis will undoubtedly be remembered as one of rock’s all-time great artists.”

Ioannis Vasilopoulos leaves behind his wife Lisa, daughter Maria, and son-in-law Conor, along with his grandchildren, Henry and Jack, and his brother George. A funeral service will be held on April 11 at a Greek Orthodox Church, where family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and legacy.
