Rockets Face Kings Without Key Player Fred VanVleet
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Houston Rockets will face the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night without star guard Fred VanVleet, who has been ruled out due to personal reasons. VanVleet, a key contributor averaging 15.0 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.7 steals per game, will miss the matchup as the Rockets aim to extend their five-game winning streak.
The Rockets, currently the second seed in the Western Conference with a 27-12 record, have relied heavily on VanVleet’s leadership and playmaking this season. His absence leaves a significant void in the lineup, with Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun, and Tari Eason expected to shoulder more responsibility.
VanVleet, a 2019 NBA champion with the Toronto Raptors, is in his second season with Houston. His impact on both ends of the court has been instrumental in the team’s success, particularly during their recent surge, which includes a 7-3 record over their last 10 games.
The Kings, meanwhile, enter the game as the ninth seed in the Western Conference with a 20-20 record. They have also been strong lately, posting a 7-3 record in their last 10 contests. Domantas Sabonis, who scored 27 points in a 120-111 victory over the Rockets last month, will look to lead Sacramento to another win.
Rockets head coach Ime Udoka acknowledged the challenge of playing without VanVleet but expressed confidence in the team’s depth. “Fred’s been a huge part of what we do, but we’ve got guys who can step up,” Udoka said. “It’s next man up, and we’re focused on continuing our momentum.”
VanVleet is expected to return for Saturday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, according to team sources. His availability will be a boost for the Rockets as they navigate a competitive Western Conference playoff race.
