Rockets’ Sengun Seeks Redemption After Tough Game 3

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun is looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance in Game 3 of the first-round playoff series against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night.
Despite teammate Fred VanVleet shining on offense, Sengun struggled early in the game, missing his first three shots close to the basket. It wasn’t until 5:43 remained in the first quarter that he made his first field goal. Overall, Sengun finished the game with 7 points on 18 attempts, a shooting percentage of just 38.9%, including eight missed shots in the paint.
“The looks were good, actually, but they were never wide open,” Sengun said of his missed opportunities. His troubles contributed to Golden State taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series. “I was just rushing, and I don’t know why.”
Sengun admitted that his missed shots affected his confidence during the game. “I didn’t feel good about it, but I think I was just thinking about it a lot, too. Missing those in the games affected me during the game. So, I have to fix those, not think about them, and move on. That is the next step for me. Hopefully, I am going to step up,” he said.
The Warriors’ defensive strategy, particularly the play of forward Draymond Green, has made it difficult for Sengun and the Rockets. Green’s ability to strategically position himself between Sengun and Houston players aiming for easier baskets has been effective against their attack.
Rockets head coach Ime Udoka is encouraging Sengun to be more aggressive in the upcoming games. “Continue to be aggressive and stay confident,” Udoka advised. “They are giving him those shots. Obviously, Green is good at playing in between two, kind of faking and fading back to the dunker and taking away some of the lob threats but also causing a little hesitation for him there.”
Udoka emphasized the need for Sengun to focus on scoring opportunities. “Alpi has to be dynamic and look to score. But what I told him was be aggressive, go look to score, don’t be hesitant as far as that, and then make the play when they do step up.”
Game 4 is scheduled for Monday night at Houston’s Toyota Center, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. Central. Sengun has previously excelled at home during this series, averaging 21.5 points on 51.5% shooting, along with 12.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals per game in the two games played in Houston.
