Rockies Struggle With 9-44 Record as Cubs Prepare for Series

DENVER, Colo. — The Colorado Rockies continue to struggle this season, now holding a dismal record of 9-44 after losing a series finale against the New York Yankees on Sunday. The poor performance comes after a rain delay pushed their arrival at the Chicago hotel to nearly midnight.
As of now, the Rockies have lost 17 consecutive series to start the season, a franchise record. They remain the only team in Major League Baseball that has not won a single series. Out of their 44 games, they have been swept seven times and achieved consecutive wins only once this season, which occurred in late April.
One of their worst losses came on May 10 against the San Diego Padres, where they were defeated 21-0. Interestingly, this was not even their worst defeat; they previously lost 25-1 to the Los Angeles Angels in 2023. The team is currently on pace to finish the year with 135 losses, surpassing last year’s record set by the Chicago White Sox.
After a rocky start at 7-33, the Rockies made some changes to their coaching staff on May 11, when manager Bud Black was replaced. The team is now under the leadership of their third base coach, along with former manager Clint Hurdle as the new bench coach. Despite the transition, the Rockies have managed only two wins out of 13 games since the changes, signaling a tough road ahead.
Amid the turmoil, one bright spot has been the performance of their best hitter, who is currently slashing .275/.325/.451 with 19 extra-base hits. The Rockies have seen seven players make their MLB debuts this season, which is the highest number in the league.
In injury news, Kris Bryant is on the injured list once again for the ninth time since joining the Rockies in 2022. He was placed on the 60-day IL due to lumbar degenerative disc disease, raising concerns about his future with the team.
The Rockies will face the Chicago Cubs next, where they have a history of close competition. In their 229-game rivalry, the Cubs have emerged victorious 117 times against the Rockies, though they have been outscored overall. The Cubs will look to sweep their series against the Rockies again, having dominated the last few matchups.
The upcoming games include matchups featuring pitchers Jameson Taillon for the Cubs, and Carson Palmquist for the Rockies, both of whom are seeking to turn their seasons around.
