LOS ANGELES (AP) — The trial of rapper A$AP Rocky, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, approached its conclusion Thursday as closing arguments were presented in a high-profile case involving allegations of gun violence. The case centers on an incident that took place in 2021, in which Mayers is accused of firing a weapon at a former friend during a confrontation on the streets of Hollywood.
During his closing arguments, Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec emphasized the core question for jurors: “Was it a real gun or was it a fake gun?” He claimed the evidence indicates that Mayers fired at Terell Ephron, also known as A$AP Relli, and is guilty of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm.
As prosecutors outlined their case, which included testimony from witnesses and video footage, A$AP Rocky’s partner, singer Rihanna, made a notable appearance in the courtroom with their two young sons, RZA and Riot. This marked the first time she brought the boys to court during the trial. Rihanna’s presence aimed to offer support to her partner as he faced serious allegations.
Representing the defense, attorney Joe Tacopina will argue that the gun involved was a prop used for security purposes, not a real firearm. He contends that Mayers had taken the prop gun from a music video set and claims that Ephron was the aggressor during the incident.
“The gun was a piece of a prop, something that wasn’t meant to hurt anyone,” Tacopina stated. “We will demonstrate that all testimony supports this claim.” The defense’s case hinges on whether jurors believe Ephron’s narrative or the evidence suggesting that the confrontation was a misguided altercation over a personal dispute.
The prosecution highlighted that Ephron suffered minor injuries when he claimed that one bullet grazed his hand. “Even if no one was seriously hurt, the underlying crime was committed when the gun was pulled out,” Przelomiec stated.
Testimony in the trial, which spanned approximately 11 days across four weeks, revolved around the accounts of several witnesses who were present during the altercation. A key moment in the trial occurred when jurors were shown surveillance video of the incident, which sparked conflicting interpretations about the propriety of the actions taken by all involved.
Przelomiec described the video evidence as crucial, stating that “nobody on that video is acting like that’s a fake gun.” Conversely, the defense argued that the proffered video and witness accounts were unreliable, claiming Ephron had ulterior motives, including a pending lawsuit against Mayers.
Amidst these arguments, jurors were instructed to disregard any indication of the potential prison sentence Mayers could face if convicted, though it was revealed during testimony that he could face up to 24 years behind bars.
As the trial nears its conclusion, jurors are set to begin deliberations soon. The outcome remains highly anticipated, not only for the parties involved but also for the wider public audience closely following the case.
This trial has ignited debate over celebrity encounters with the law and raised questions about the implications of their actions on their careers and families.
With jury deliberations starting Friday, all eyes will remain focused on the courtroom as A$AP Rocky’s fate hangs in the balance, with Rihanna and their children providing unwavering support during this intense period.
