Rodrygo’s Double Leads Real Madrid to Victory Over Salzburg
MADRID, Spain — Rodrygo Goes scored twice in the first half to lead Real Madrid to a crucial 2-0 victory over RB Salzburg in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu. The win keeps Madrid’s hopes alive for advancing to the knockout stages of the competition.
The Brazilian forward opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, capitalizing on a precise assist from Jude Bellingham. Rodrygo doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a stunning strike after another brilliant setup by Bellingham, who delivered a backheel pass to set up the goal. The English midfielder was instrumental in both goals, showcasing his creativity and vision.
Despite a spirited start from Salzburg, which saw midfielder Gloukh come close to scoring early, Real Madrid’s clinical finishing proved decisive. The Austrian side struggled to break down Madrid’s defense, led by Antonio Rüdiger and Federico Valverde, who filled in at right-back due to injuries.
“Rodrygo was exceptional tonight,” said Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. “He took his chances well, and the team showed great character. We needed this win, and the players delivered.”
The match also saw controversy when Vinicius Jr. was booked for simulation in the 41st minute after going down in the penalty area. The yellow card means the Brazilian winger will miss Madrid’s final group-stage match against Brest due to suspension.
Salzburg, managed by Thomas Letsch in his Champions League debut, failed to capitalize on their early opportunities. “We had our chances, but Madrid’s quality made the difference,” Letsch said. “We need to learn from this and move forward.”
With the win, Real Madrid moves into a stronger position in Group C, needing only a draw in their final match to secure a spot in the round of 16. Salzburg, meanwhile, faces an uphill battle to advance.
