Ronaldo-Messi MLS Reunion Would Be a ‘Great Story,’ Says Hamann
MANCHESTER, England — Cristiano Ronaldo could be set for a sensational reunion with Lionel Messi in Major League Soccer (MLS), with former Germany international Dietmar Hamann calling the potential matchup a “great story.” Ronaldo, 39, is nearing the end of his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr, sparking speculation about his next move.
Ronaldo, who has six months remaining on his current deal, has been advised to consider joining an MLS club, potentially setting the stage for a showdown with Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is also expected to represent Portugal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite his age, Ronaldo continues to defy expectations, maintaining remarkable form and scoring consistently. Reports suggest he could extend his contract with Al-Nassr for an additional year, with the deal reportedly worth €200 million (£168 million/$206 million). However, the allure of playing in a sixth World Cup and potentially continuing his career in the U.S. has fueled speculation about a move to MLS.
Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke believes Ronaldo could be tempted to join MLS and reignite his rivalry with Messi. “Cristiano Ronaldo is an extremist and one of, if not the greatest player of all time,” Yorke told Coin Casino. “Ronaldo is doing everything he can to extend his career, he’s defying the odds to play as long as possible.”
Yorke added, “I won’t rule out Ronaldo going to the MLS, with the World Cup coming there, it may be another opportunity for him to feature in Portugal’s squad and potentially win the competition. If he makes the team, I could see him staying in America and playing against Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami.”
Ronaldo has made it clear that he aims to reach 1,000 career goals before retiring, a milestone that could be achieved in MLS. Meanwhile, Messi’s future at Inter Miami remains uncertain, as the club has yet to trigger an extension option for 2026. The possibility of the two legends facing off in the U.S. has fans and pundits alike buzzing with anticipation.
