Rory McIlroy Kicks Off Canadian Open with Rising Star Luke Clanton

CALEDON, Ontario – Rory McIlroy begins his quest at the RBC Canadian Open this week, where he will tee off with newcomer Luke Clanton. The event, which runs June 4-7, serves as a key lead-in to the U.S. Open.
This will mark McIlroy’s fifth consecutive appearance at the Canadian Open, where he is a two-time champion, winning in 2019 and 2022. “I love that it’s the week leading into the U.S. Open,” McIlroy said on Wednesday, noting his strong performance in past Opens after playing in the Canadian event.
Joining McIlroy are Clanton, a recent graduate from PGA TOUR University, and Ludvig Åberg from Sweden, who topped the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking. Clanton’s debut as a professional is especially poignant, as he looks to leave a lasting impression on the tour.
Clanton opened his press conference by thanking his family and coaches for their sacrifices leading him to this moment. His childhood memories of watching McIlroy play fuel his excitement. “It’s like a dream come true to play alongside someone as accomplished as Rory,” he reflected.
McIlroy praised the PGA TOUR U program that supports young talent. “To see Luke and his peers take advantage of that opportunity to earn their TOUR cards is awesome to see,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of new energy in the game.
As anticipation builds for the tournament, Clanton aims to turn his dreams of pro golf into reality. His first challenge will be at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley, where a strong performance could set the tone for his career.
“It’s a special week, and hopefully I can make my mark,” Clanton concluded, ready to face the excitement of his professional debut against one of the sport’s biggest names.
