Rose Byrne Wins Silver Bear at 2025 Berlinale

BERLIN, Germany — Australian actress Rose Byrne took home the Silver Bear for Best Leading Performance at the 2025 Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday, February 22. Byrne received the award for her role in Mary Bronstein’s film, If I Had Legs, I’d Kick You, marking a significant recognition of her talent amid a competitive year of film.
Byrne’s appearance at the festival was marked by a stunning black satin dress from Marina Moscone’s Fall 2024 collection. Although the gown featured an elegant cape that added a dramatic flair, some creases in the fabric sparked discussion among fashion critics. Nevertheless, her overall look was celebrated for its sophistication, complemented by beautifully styled hair and striking Nina Runsdorf earrings. Stylist Kate Young and hair stylist Miguel Martin Perez contributed to her ensemble.
During the awards ceremony, Byrne reflected on her journey in the film industry. ‘It’s been an extraordinary experience to work on this project and to be recognized alongside such talented individuals,’ Byrne stated. ‘I’m grateful for this honor and the support of the festival.’
This year’s festival contentiously culminated with Norwegian filmmaker Dag Johan Haugerud’s Dreams (Sex Love) winning the distinguished Golden Bear. The film, which features a teenage girl’s introspective journey fueled by her feelings for a teacher, marked the third entry in Haugerud’s trilogy exploring themes of sexuality.
Andrew Scott also received accolades at this year’s festival, winning Best Supporting Performance for his role in Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon. Scott, who couldn’t attend the ceremony, emphasized the impact of the festival on aspiring filmmakers in his acceptance video.
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize was awarded to The Blue Trail by Gabriel Mascaro, and Huo Meng earned the Best Director award for his film Living The Land.
This year marked the first Berlinale under the leadership of new director Tricia Tuttle, who opened the festival with a screening of Tom Tykwer’s The Light. The festival ran from February 13 to 22, showcasing a diverse range of films, including notable works from emerging directors and veterans alike.
As the festival celebrated cinema and provided a platform for essential storytelling, winners like Byrne and Scott emerged as standout talents, paving the way for future recognition in an ever-evolving industry.
