Russian Forces Bolster Positions in Ukraine, Putin Says Counteroffensive Has Failed
President Vladimir Putin has announced that Russian forces have strengthened their positions along the entire front line in Ukraine. He stated that this action was taken in response to the failure of Ukraine’s counteroffensive this year. The decision made by Putin in 2022 to send tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine initiated a war that has caused widespread devastation and resulted in the deaths or injuries of hundreds of thousands of people.
At present, Russia controls approximately 17.5% of Ukrainian territory. Western analysis of the territory held by Russia suggests that Ukraine’s four-month-old counteroffensive this year has made negligible territorial gains. Although Ukraine successfully reclaimed some territory previously occupied by Russia, the Ukrainian army has encountered significant difficulties in breaking through Russian lines, which have been fortified with minefields and additional troops.
In video remarks shared on social media by Kremlin journalist Pavel Zarubin, Putin stated, “As for the counteroffensive, which is allegedly stalling, it has failed completely.” When asked about the battle for the eastern Ukrainian town of Avdiivka, Putin acknowledged that the opposing side is preparing new active offensive operations. He described the current situation as “an active defense” along the entire length of the contact line and expressed that Russian troops are enhancing their positions across a large area.
The Belfer Center at Harvard has reported that Ukraine gained a net total of 8 square miles of territory in the month leading up to October 10th. The conflict in eastern Ukraine originated in 2014 following the overthrow of a pro-Russian president during Ukraine’s Maidan Revolution and Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea. Since then, Russian-backed forces have been engaged in combat with Ukraine’s armed forces.
