Sam Burns U.s. Open Oakmont Country Club

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania — The 125th U.S. Open is underway, and Sam Burns holds a narrow lead after carding a 5-under 65 in his second round. With this score, he takes a one-stroke advantage at 3-under par over J.J. Spaun as the tournament reaches its halfway point.

Viktor Hovland trails at 1-under, making him the only other player under par as play resumes Saturday morning. The cut line is projected at 7-over par, affecting notable players like Justin Thomas, Shane Lowry, and Ludvig Åberg. Notably, Rory McIlroy secured a spot for the weekend after birdying his final hole of Round 2.

With Oakmont Country Club serving as the host for the U.S. Open for the 10th time, only three players have managed to stay under par. The historic course has challenged many competitors, and there could be significant changes as Moving Day unfolds.

Burns shocked many with his impressive 65, the third-lowest score ever recorded at an Oakmont-hosted U.S. Open. He trails only Spaun after Day 2, who also played well amid tough conditions.

Adam Scott and Ben Griffin round out the top five, with their capabilities adding further excitement to the championship hunt. Renowned players such as Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm are further down the leaderboard, making for an unpredictable contest as they seek to mount a comeback.

In a disappointing turn, Tiger Woods is absent due to recovery from recent surgery, while Phil Mickelson missed the cut after his 11th attempt for a career grand slam, finishing second six times in U.S. Open history.

CBS Sports will provide comprehensive coverage of the U.S. Open throughout the weekend, offering fans an opportunity to catch all the action. Television coverage begins tomorrow at 10 a.m. on USA Network, followed by NBC at noon.

With players poised for a possible surge, the rest of the tournament promises to be exciting as competitors strive for the championship title.
