Sam Burns Leads U.S. Open Golf Championship Following Impressive Round

OAKMONT, Pa. — Sam Burns shot a stellar second-round score of 65, giving him a one-stroke lead at the 2025 U.S. Open on Friday. His impressive performance at Oakmont Country Club put him at three under par, just ahead of first-round leader J.J. Spaun.
Burns, who has played consistently throughout the tournament, noted that the challenging conditions affected many golfers. Only Viktor Hovland joined Burns under par at 1 under. Late collapses from competitors like Thriston Lawrence and Thomas Detry left no other players in good standing.
Prominent golfers struggled at Oakmont, with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler finishing at four over, seven strokes behind Burns. Rory McIlroy, the defending Masters champion, barely made the cut, while Bryson DeChambeau, the previous U.S. Open winner, missed the cut altogether.
The weather added to the difficulties, with heavy rain prompting officials to halt play around 8:15 p.m. ET, leaving a few players still on the course. The USGA plans to resume second-round play early Saturday.
Despite challenging conditions, Burns displayed a strong game. He made crucial par saves on several holes, enabling him to stay at the top of the leaderboard. Following him closely is J.J. Spaun, who has shown resilience with 11 straight pars and remains at two under for the tournament.
All eyes will be on whether Burns can maintain his lead as the tournament progresses into the weekend. His performance has surely caught the attention of both fans and competitors alike.
