San Diego State Aztecs Tip Off Season Against Long Beach State
SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State men’s basketball team starts its 2025-26 season against Long Beach State on Tuesday evening at Viejas Arena. This game marks the 63rd meeting between the Aztecs and the Beach, with SDSU leading the series 40-22 and currently boasting a 20-game win streak in season openers at home.
This season is significant for SDSU as it is their last in the Mountain West Conference. The Aztecs, unanimous favorites to win the league, have historically dominated their season openers. They haven’t lost to unranked teams on opening night since 2004, and they aim to extend their impressive record against Big West programs.
Head coach Brian Dutcher leads the team into this season as they strive for their 17th Mountain West title. Dutcher has established himself as a formidable coach, achieving at least 21 wins in each of his first eight seasons. He is on the verge of hitting the 200-win mark, joining an elite group of coaches in the program’s history.
SDSU brings back 61.9% of its minutes played from last season and 76.2% of its scoring. Preseason accolades have been given to junior guard Miles Byrd, named Preseason Mountain West Player of the Year, and freshman guard Elzie Harrington, who earned Preseason Freshman of the Year titles.
Last season, San Diego State led the nation in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 38.3% from the floor. They will look to carry that defensive prowess into this matchup against Long Beach State.
The Aztecs approach the game confident after two exhibition matches, including a recent victory over San Diego. With a solid roster and strong coaching, they are eager to begin the season on a high note against a familiar rival.
