UC San Francisco Employees Gain Shuttle Access to Mission Bay via Uber

San Francisco, CA – A new partnership between UC San Francisco and Uber will allow UCSF employees to ride Uber’s shuttle buses to the Mission Bay campus. This service kicks off in June and aims to ease commuting amid parking challenges.
Beginning June 2, UCSF employees will be able to purchase a $160 monthly subscription to the Uber shuttles. The program will offer ten different routes with multiple stops across the Bay Area for those commuting on weekdays.
Jon Giacomi, UCSF’s associate vice chancellor, explained the benefits of the partnership, stating, “Given UCSF’s limited parking capacity and our sustainability goals to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to campus, joining with Uber’s employee commuter shuttle program is a win for both organizations.”
Uber’s commuter shuttles, which provide Wi-Fi, charging outlets, and climate control, will drop off and pick up UCSF employees at 3rd and 16th streets in San Francisco, close to Uber’s headquarters. This shuttle model was envisioned before the pandemic and has garnered interest within the UCSF community.
Vicki Sundstrom, manager of UCSF’s Strategic Planning Unit, noted, “There’s been an appetite for it, and it’s nice to be able to make it happen for the UCSF community.”
Amanda Aguilar, a communications specialist at UCSF, expressed her excitement about the new shuttle service. Commencing her commute from Fremont four days a week, she noted the financial savings and time efficiency: “This will transform my commute. I will be saving a lot of money. I won’t have to sit in traffic. I can sleep. Who wouldn’t want to ride a luxury bus?”
As the service launches, UCSF and Uber will manage the availability of seats on the shuttles, beginning with a limited number and gradually expanding. This initiative arrives shortly after the announcement of a new San Francisco Bay Ferry terminal at Mission Bay, further enhancing transportation options in the area.
