Sauber F1 Team Partners with Drake, Fans Fear Drake Curse in 2024 Season
One Formula 1 team in particular is bracing themselves for the infamous Drake curse theory after enlisting the help of rap superstar Drake to launch their rebranding. Fans are anxiously speculating the outcome for Sauber F1 Team Kick Sauber as they partner with the Canadian artist, who has developed a reputation for bringing bad luck to teams and athletes he associates with.
The peculiar phenomenon began when Drake started wearing soccer team shirts, and the teams he donned the kit for went on to lose their next matches. It soon expanded to include athletes who faced disappointing results after meeting the rapper, and more recently, stars who suffered defeats after Drake placed bets on them to win.
Given this notorious history, the future looks uncertain for Sauber F1 Team Kick Sauber, whose rebrand was unveiled on New Year's Day with Drake’s support as one of their gambling company partners. Fans are expressing concern, with one commenting, ‘Cursed,’ while another jokingly exclaimed, ‘That’s Sauber f***ed.’ A third stated, ‘The Drake curse has expanded to F1 now. Let’s see how this plays out for Sauber.’
However, some fans found humor in the situation, with one remarking, ‘Can’t be Drake cursed if you’re the worst on the grid.’ Meanwhile, others firmly believe in the curse’s existence, stating that it has affected Sauber’s performance significantly, and that the Drake curse is indeed real.
It is worth noting that Sauber F1 Team Kick Sauber’s recent track record, racing as Alfa Romeo, has been lackluster. Except for a sixth-place finish in the constructors’ championship in 2022, they have consistently occupied the eighth and ninth positions. The team will transition from Stake to Audi‘s factory team in 2026, marking the end of Alfa Romeo’s title sponsorship.
Sauber F1 Team Kick Sauber is not the only name change expected on the grid for the upcoming season. Another rebranding stunt comes from AlphaTauri, who will reportedly adopt the name ‘Visa Cash App Racing Bulls.’
