Savannah Braces for Rare Winter Storm, Potential Snowfall
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Savannah residents are preparing for an unusual winter weather event, with forecasts predicting snow and freezing temperatures next week. The last significant snowfall in the city occurred in 2018, causing widespread closures and disruptions.
Karen Edmond, a Chicago native now living in Savannah, shared her perspective on the upcoming cold snap. “It’s not Chicago cold. This is Savannah cold, which is like summer all year round for me,” she said. While some residents like Edmond are accustomed to harsh winters, others are less prepared for the potential challenges.
Anjali Sharma, a Georgia resident, expressed excitement about the possibility of snow. “I would love it if it snowed again. It would be magical and fun…We hope that mother nature is on our side,” she said.
City officials are urging residents to take precautions ahead of the storm. Recommendations include protecting pipes from freezing, stocking up on essential supplies, and ensuring heating systems are in working order. The city will also have sand on standby to address icy road conditions, as salt is not commonly used in the region.
Transportation delays are expected, and officials advise residents to check tire pressures, windshield wipers, and antifreeze levels in their vehicles. Warming centers, such as the Old Savannah City Mission and Come As You Are, will be available for those in need of shelter.
The National Weather Service predicts minor impacts from freezing rain, snow, and sleet from Tuesday, Jan. 21, through Wednesday, Jan. 22. The city is coordinating with the Georgia Department of Transportation to manage state-maintained roadways and ensure public safety.
Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is closely monitoring the forecast and encourages residents to stay informed. Emergency services will operate as usual, with residents advised to call 311 for non-emergency assistance and 911 for emergencies.
