Savannah Georgia Snowstorm January 2025

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – The City of Savannah experienced a rare winter weather event Wednesday morning, with snowfall blanketing the historic coastal city. The city declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, preparing for potential disruptions caused by the unusual weather.

Residents awoke to a light dusting of snow, a rare sight in this southern city known for its mild winters. The National Weather Service reported temperatures dropping to near-freezing levels overnight, creating conditions conducive to snowfall. “This is not something we see often here,” said Savannah Mayor Van Johnson. “We are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of our residents.”

City officials activated emergency protocols, including pre-treating roads with brine and deploying snowplows. Public schools and several government offices closed for the day, while residents were advised to limit travel. “We want everyone to stay safe and avoid unnecessary risks,” said Emergency Management Director Dennis Jones.

Local businesses, particularly those in the tourism sector, reported mixed reactions. While some visitors were thrilled by the picturesque snowfall, others faced travel delays. “It’s a beautiful sight, but we’re definitely not used to this,” said hotel manager Lisa Carter.

The snowfall is expected to taper off by midday, with temperatures rising above freezing in the afternoon. City officials urged residents to remain cautious as melting snow could lead to icy conditions.
