Snow School Closure Midwest Weather February 2025

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — School districts across the Midwest are bracing for the impact of severe winter weather, leading to numerous closures and delays on Thursday, February 13, 2025. A winter storm is expected to dump several inches of snow in regions including Missouri and Michigan, prompting local schools to adjust schedules accordingly.

As of Wednesday evening, multiple Kansas City-area schools announced delays, with many districts opting for remote learning. Adrian R-3, Breckenridge R-1, and multiple charter schools in the area have canceled classes for the day. “The safety of our students is our top priority, and we must adapt to the changing weather conditions,” said a spokesperson for the Kansas City, Kansas, School District.

In addition to the Kansas City metro area, Michigan has declared winter storm warnings as snow accumulations are projected between four to eight inches. Detroit Public Schools are among those canceling classes due to anticipated hazardous conditions. “We don’t take these decisions lightly, but the forecast prompts caution for our students and staff,” stated Detroit Schools superintendent.

The National Weather Service reported that wind chills will drop significantly, hitting as low as 15 degrees below zero in some areas. Residents are advised to take precautions when venturing outdoors, particularly during morning commutes when conditions are expected to be most treacherous.

Emergency services are preparing for potential emergency calls related to weather-related incidents. Local authorities urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay informed via local weather updates.

School closures and delays are also reported in other states affected by the storm, including parts of Alabama and Mississippi. As of late Wednesday, schools like Southern Cayuga Central Schools and Camden Central have confirmed two-hour delays with no morning pre-K sessions.

Safety officials recommend keeping emergency kits in vehicles, ensuring that students dress warmly, and being aware of the latest weather updates as the situation develops. More snow is expected on Saturday, potentially complicating recovery efforts and school schedules.
