Scottie Pippen’s Blockchain Mission Bridges Culture and Crypto

LOS ANGELES, CA — Scottie Pippen, renowned NBA Hall of Famer, is diving into the world of cryptocurrency not for fame but to create a cultural impact. In an interview, Pippen shared insights into how he views blockchain as more than just a financial opportunity; it is a chance for cultural expression.
Pippen, who played in the NBA from 1987 to 2004, noted that discussions about investing were rare during his playing days. ‘I don’t think players talked too much about it,’ he said. The exception was Junior Bridgeman, a former player who transformed his earnings into a successful fast-food business.
While Bridgeman quietly built an empire, Pippen initially struggled with investments, including a failed venture with Taco Bell franchises. ‘I didn’t have the bandwidth to do it myself,’ he said, referring to his lack of knowledge and support.
Today, investment discussions among players have changed. Pippen attributes his recent interest in cryptocurrency to Bitcoin, which he recognizes as the cornerstone of the crypto world. ‘It seems like it’s the main coin. It kind of sets the standard,’ he stated.
His deep dive into Bitcoin began approximately three years ago, particularly after the cryptocurrency plunged from its all-time high of $69,000 to around $17,000. ‘That’s when it really got on my radar,’ Pippen remarked.
Pippen’s crypto project, $BALL, centers on the basketball from his first NBA championship in 1991. This initiative seeks to show how physical objects tied to cultural history can be valuable assets in the digital realm. ‘It’s not about an individual accolade. It’s about teamwork, and what the ball represents for the culture,’ he explained.
The $BALL project has evolved into an ecosystem that includes partnerships in gaming, apparel, and even a documentary. This contrasts with other athletes’ crypto ventures, which often focus on sponsorships. Pippen’s vision emphasizes legacy and storytelling.
‘Ball is a language,’ Pippen’s team remarked. ‘Everybody speaks it. We just needed to put it onchain.’
Looking forward, $BALL plans to integrate with games like Fortnite and feature a mobile game called Meme Ball. They also have a physical-digital tour designed to connect Web2 and Web3 communities.
As Pippen engages with the rapidly evolving crypto space, he still knows when to defer to experienced voices such as MicroStrategy‘s Michael Saylor, who advised him to remain quiet about his speculations on Bitcoin’s origin. ‘I’m gonna try to keep my mouth closed and follow Michael’s lead,’ he laughed.
