Scottie Scheffler Primed for U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club

OAKMONT, Pa. — World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler arrives at Oakmont Country Club this week as the favorite for the 2025 U.S. Open, which takes place from June 12 to 15. This will be the 10th time the prestigious course hosts the championship, known for its difficulty and historical significance.
With a par 70 layout stretching 7,372 yards, Oakmont poses a formidable challenge, often testing the mettle of even the most skilled golfers. In the past, the scoring averages have generally hovered above par, and this year seems no different. Players will face lightning-fast greens, deep bunkers, and thick rough, requiring both precision and mental toughness.
“The greens are incredibly fast and you have to hit the right spots to make putts,” said Scheffler. “Patience is key this week.”
During the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont, the average score was a staggering 75.705, with half the holes ranking among the 50 hardest of the season. In 2016, the average score dropped slightly to 73.562, highlighting the course’s complex design.
Golf course architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner oversaw a significant restoration of Oakmont in 2023, aiming to recapture the vision of its original designers, H.C. Fownes and his son William. This year, the course promises to be even more demanding with enlarged greens and fewer bunkers.
Of the 156 players in this year’s field, 31 have past experience at Oakmont, including Dustin Johnson, who won the 2016 edition. “I feel great about my game heading into this week,” said Johnson.
Strong performances in the lead-up to the tournament have included notable names like Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning champion, and Rory McIlroy, who aims to claim a second U.S. Open title. Both have a track record at Oakmont, although the competition will be stiff.
The weather is expected to be dry and warm for the first two days, but forecasters warn of possible rain and storms for the weekend, which could change the dynamics for the players still in the mix.
With every player aiming for the coveted trophy, it promises to be a thrilling week of golf.
