SDSU Aims for 12th Straight Win Over Wyoming in Mountain West Showdown
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The San Diego State Aztecs men’s basketball team will host the Wyoming Cowboys at Viejas Arena on Saturday at 5 p.m., aiming to extend their 11-game winning streak in the series. The game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network and 760-AM.
The Aztecs (14-5, 7-3 Mountain West) are coming off a narrow 71-68 victory over San Jose State on Tuesday, but their performance at home has been uncharacteristically shaky this season. They have already lost three games at Viejas Arena after going 70-6 over the previous five years. Head coach Brian Dutcher is one win away from becoming the fourth coach in Mountain West history to reach 100 conference victories.
SDSU’s starting center, Jared Coleman-Jones, remains a game-time decision due to a shoulder injury. The 6-foot-10 senior missed two weeks of preseason practice after dislocating his shoulder in October and reinjured it during last Saturday’s game at Nevada. Sophomore Miles Heide started in his place against San Jose State.
Wyoming (11-10, 4-6) has exceeded expectations under first-year head coach Sundance Wicks, a Wyoming native and former assistant coach. The Cowboys are led by senior guard Obi Agbim, who averages 18.1 points per game and leads the Mountain West in 3-point accuracy at 47.0%. Agbim’s heroics in their last game, a dramatic 83-72 overtime win over Fresno State, included a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.
The Cowboys prefer a slow-paced offense, ranking 354th nationally in average possession length at 19.8 seconds. However, their ability to heat up from beyond the arc could pose a challenge for SDSU, which allowed 15 3-pointers in their last game against San Jose State.
In the series history, SDSU holds a 51-41 advantage and has won 16 straight home games against Wyoming. The Cowboys’ last victory at Viejas Arena came in 2007, when they won 66-65 on a last-second basket.
At halftime, SDSU will honor longtime radio commentator Ted Leitner, who is in his final season with the team. The ceremony will include appearances by more than a dozen former players.
Both teams face critical conference matchups next week. SDSU travels to Colorado State on Feb. 8, while Wyoming returns home to host Utah State.
