Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ Leads 2025 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Nominations

VANCOUVER, Canada — Sean Baker‘s screwball comedy Anora dominated the 2025 Vancouver Film Critics Circle (VFCC) nominations, earning five nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, the organization announced Monday.

The film, which follows a young sex worker’s entanglement with the son of a Russian oligarch, also secured nominations for Mikey Madison as Best Actress and Yura Borisov as Best Supporting Actor. The winners will be revealed on Feb. 19 in Vancouver.

Three other films earned three nominations each: Brady Corbet‘s The Brutalist, Jesse Eisenberg‘s A Real Pain, and James Mangold‘s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. The Brutalist received nods for Best Picture, Best Actor (Adrien Brody), and Best Screenplay, while A Real Pain was recognized for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Kieran Culkin), and Best Screenplay.

A Complete Unknown garnered nominations for Timothée Chalamet as Best Actor, Edward Norton as Best Supporting Actor, and Monica Barbaro as Best Supporting Actress. Meanwhile, Coralie Fargeat‘s The Substance earned Demi Moore a Best Actress nomination and Margaret Qualley a Best Supporting Actress nod.

In the Best Picture category, Anora will compete against The Brutalist and A Real Pain. Denis Villeneuve‘s Dune: Part Two also received a nomination for Best Director, alongside Baker and RaMell Ross for Nickel Boys.

The VFCC’s documentary category features No Other Land, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, and Will & Harper, while the Best International Film category includes All We Imagine as Light, Emilia Pérez, and Flow.

The 25th annual VFCC awards ceremony will take place in Vancouver, celebrating the year’s most outstanding achievements in film.
