Search Continues for Missing Man After Boat Capsizes on River Thames
A man in his 60s has been reported missing following an incident in which a rowing boat capsized on the River Thames near Walton-on-Thames. The incident, which occurred near Sunbury Lock, sparked a significant emergency response early on Friday morning, involving multiple agencies in the search and rescue efforts.
Rescue operations commenced shortly after authorities were alerted at approximately 08:51 BST. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, alongside Surrey Police, were among the first responders at the scene. A fire service spokesperson stated, “Our crews are on site, working with the coastguard, Surrey Police, and other agencies. Five individuals were rescued, and work is ongoing to locate a sixth.”
Three of the rescued individuals were transported to St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey for further medical evaluation, according to the South East Coast Ambulance Service. The spokesperson added, “Five people were brought to safety, three of whom have been taken to St Peter’s hospital for further checks.”
Surrey Police confirmed that a total of six adults had been involved in the accident. “Of those people who entered the water, five have since been accounted for,” the police stated. “Sadly, we believe a man in his 60s may still be in the river. His relatives have been informed and are being kept updated.”
Chief Inspector Andy Jenkins commented on the ongoing investigation, saying, “This is a very distressing time for all involved, and we continue to support our partners in the search for the missing man. Our inquiries to establish the exact circumstances of how the boat capsized remain underway, but at this time, we do not believe there to be any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement.”
The public has been asked to avoid the area to allow rescue teams to continue their search efforts unhindered. Further updates are expected as the investigation develops and more information becomes available.
