Athens, GreeceSebastian Korda secured a hard-fought victory over Alexei Popyrin on Sunday evening, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance in the ATP tournament in Athens. This match marked Korda’s first trip to Greece, and he expressed his excitement about the experience.

“It was up and down, but overall I think I improved my level in the second set,” Korda said. “He was serving great. In the first set, he had eight aces, so I was just trying to put it back in the court and take my chances.” The 25-year-old American is prepared for his next challenge as he continues his performance in Athens, hoping to build on his current momentum.

Korda’s victory came in their second head-to-head meeting in just a month. In their previous encounter in Stockholm, Korda also prevailed in three sets. This time, he significantly improved his second serve performance, winning 66 percent of those points compared to Popyrin’s 45 percent, according to Infosys ATP Stats.

“It’s been amazing, walking around, enjoying the great food, and just really enjoying it here,” Korda added.

In other tournament news, Jaimee Tabilo eliminated the top seed with a close score of 7-6(7), 6-7(6), 7-5 after three hours of play, setting the stage for a highly anticipated match against Novak Djokovic. Tabilo proudly remarked, “I’ve played at the center court and it’s huge. I’m excited to play, even against Djokovic.”

As the tournament progresses, Korda and other competitors will aim for the championship to enhance their standings ahead of the year-end finals.
