Sen. Gillibrand Outlines Ambitious Agenda for 119th Congress
WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWNY) – U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand outlined her legislative priorities for the 119th Congress during a virtual meeting on Friday, focusing on improving the lives of New York residents through expanded paid leave, lower drug costs, and protections for 9/11 survivors.
Gillibrand, a Democrat, emphasized her commitment to making 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave universally accessible, reducing prescription drug prices, and combating age discrimination in the workplace. She also pledged to secure long-term funding for the health care of 9/11 survivors, including firefighters and first responders.
“Firefighters, first responders, and other 9/11 survivors deserve to know that if and when they develop a 9/11-related condition, they will be cared for,” Gillibrand said. “In the past, this initiative has enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support, and President Trump signed our 2019 bill into law.”
The 119th Congress, which was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2025, faces a divided political landscape, with Republicans holding a majority in both the House and Senate. Despite this, Gillibrand expressed optimism about advancing her agenda, citing past bipartisan cooperation on issues like 9/11 survivor funding.
Gillibrand’s proposals come at a time when New Yorkers continue to grapple with rising health care costs and economic challenges. Her focus on paid leave aligns with growing national calls for better work-life balance, while her efforts to lower drug prices aim to address a persistent concern for many Americans.
As the legislative session progresses, Gillibrand’s ability to navigate the Republican-controlled Congress will be closely watched. Her emphasis on bipartisan issues, such as support for 9/11 survivors, may provide a pathway for advancing her broader agenda.
