Jury selection is underway in Manhattan federal court for the corruption trial of Bob Menendez, a prominent United States senator from New Jersey. Menendez, along with two New Jersey businessmen, is facing 16 criminal charges, including acting as an unregistered agent of the Egyptian government.

During the trial proceedings, the presiding Judge Sidney H Stein informed potential jurors about the bribery-related charges against Menendez. The senator and his wife, Nadine, have been accused of accepting bribes in exchange for political favors and undisclosed assistance to Egypt and Qatar.

In September, prosecutors outlined a complex scheme where Menendez allegedly agreed to provide Egypt with arms sales support and assist in securing a monopoly for halal meat exports. Another businessman, Wael Hana, sought to benefit from Menendez’s political influence in various dealings.

Following the initial indictment, additional charges were brought against Menendez, including acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. The trial is expected to span several weeks, shedding light on the alleged corrupt activities of the senator.

Despite the legal hurdles, Menendez has maintained his innocence, vowing to defend his record on Egypt and continue his political career. However, his popularity among New Jersey voters has waned, with calls from within the Democratic Party for his resignation.
