Ha Seong Kim Tampa Bay Rays Debut

TAMPA, Fla. — Ha-Seong Kim is on track to make his much-anticipated debut with the Tampa Bay Rays next week, as the team returns to Steinbrenner Field to face off against the Baltimore Orioles. Kim, signed as one of the Rays’ most expensive free agents, has been working through a rehab assignment in Durham after undergoing surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder last August.

The 29-year-old infielder, who played four seasons with the San Diego Padres, is expected to bolster the Rays’ infield, bringing a strong defensive presence and notable offensive capability to the shortstop position. Kim won a Gold Glove in 2023 and has accumulated 47 career home runs, making him a significant addition to the lineup.

As Kim’s return becomes imminent, the Rays face the challenging task of making room on the roster. To activate Kim, the team will need to remove him from the 60-day Injured List and place him back on the 40-man roster. This part is likely straightforward for Erik Neander, the Rays’ President of Baseball Operations.

Richie Palacios, who has not appeared in a game since mid-April, could be a candidate to move to the 60-day Injured List, especially considering he recently started rehab games in Port Charlotte. If not Palacios, Hunter Bigge is another option for the 60-day IL as his health status remains unclear.

The decision on who will be replaced on the roster remains a contentious issue. Previously, the Rays opted to send down Chandler Simpson in favor of Jake Mangum, a move that faced backlash. Kim’s return necessitates another tough decision similar to that one.

Mangum’s positional flexibility in the outfield may prove valuable, particularly given the Rays’ struggles against left-handed pitchers this season. As of June 8, they rank 20th in the league with a .223 average against lefties. With Kim likely shifting into the lineup, who becomes the casualty will be a central question.

Another player potentially facing demotion is Taylor Walls, who has struggled offensively with a .190 batting average but has excelled defensively, making him a candidate for a Platinum Glove Award. Walls’ future could include an assignment to Durham, as he does have options left.

Additionally, Curtis Mead is also in consideration for a possible reassignment. Despite a rocky start to the season, he has shown improvement lately, combining decent defense with effective hitting.

As for the logistics of integrating Kim back into the team, it appears the Rays may lean towards placing him at shortstop while allowing Walls to provide backup. Kim is expected to gradually adjust back into regular playing time, especially following a lengthy recovery period.

The Rays are eager to see the impact Kim can make to their playoff prospects. With a solid record and recent success in the standings, the reintegration of Kim into the lineup is viewed as a positive step forward.
