Sergio Perez Formula 1 News Interview

SUZUKA, Japan – Sergio Perez is exploring options for a potential return to Formula 1 in 2026, emphasizing a strategic decision about his future. Perez, speaking from his home in Mexico, expressed he would only consider a comeback if the right project aligned with his aspirations.

Last December, Perez parted ways with Red Bull Racing after a successful tenure that saw him help the team secure consecutive Constructors’ Championships in 2022 and 2023. Despite a career-best finish of second in the Drivers’ standings in 2023, his performance in 2024 was marred by struggles with the RB20 car, which ultimately led to the separation.

“I wasn’t really expecting it to happen. It only became clearer once we were in Qatar,” said Perez regarding the decision to leave Red Bull. The 35-year-old driver highlighted that the late-season discussions and negotiations resulted in a swift exit from the team.

Since leaving F1, Perez has spent quality time at home with his family, relishing the chance to step back from the racing world after over a decade of constant travel. “It’s been great to step back a bit, see the sport from the outside,” he noted. “I feel like I’m in a privileged position with my career.”

Despite his extended break, Perez remains open to returning to the sport he loves. “If I find a project that motivates me fully to come back, where the team believe in me and appreciate my experience, it would be very attractive,” he said.

Perez is actively evaluating offers and has reportedly been in talks with multiple teams, including a potential opportunity with Cadillac Racing set to join F1 in 2026. “We are talking to a few teams. My goal is to find a project that makes sense,” he confirmed.

Reflecting on his time at Red Bull, Perez expressed regret over how his stint ended, particularly during a challenging final year where he scored only nine points across eight Grand Prix weekends. “Especially last year, I didn’t get to show what I’m able to do as a driver,” he lamented, adding that the difficulties of the car were often underestimated.

Perez also expressed hope for Red Bull’s future, as he remains connected with friends there. “I want to wish them the best. Yuki Tsunoda has the talent and right mentality to succeed at Red Bull,” he stated.

As the sport gears up for the upcoming races, Perez is preparing to make decisions regarding his career trajectory. “I’ve spent a long time in F1 already. Once you step back, you realize how much you give up to be in the sport,” he concluded, emphasizing the need for motivation when considering a return.
