Severe Thunderstorms Forecast Weekend

HARTFORD, Conn. – Showers and severe thunderstorms are in the forecast for this weekend across Connecticut, the upper Hudson Valley, and northern portions of the state. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued through 11 p.m. Saturday as a low-pressure system moves into the region. Most intense storms are expected to develop along and west of the I-95 corridor.

The National Weather Service warns of potential strong winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning during this period. While the risk for severe weather is low, with a threat level rated at 1 on a scale from 1 to 5, isolated storms may produce wind gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour along with large hail.

A quiet start is anticipated on Sunday with showers expected to intensify later in the day. Participants in the 5 Boro Bike Tour will experience moderate temperatures in the mid-60s with mostly cloudy skies during the ride, although a light shower cannot be completely ruled out.

The work week ahead will bring intermittent rain and possibly additional storms lasting into Tuesday. Fortunately, the pace of the rain spread out over several days should lower the risk of flash floods, although minor flooding may occur in low-lying areas following heavy downpours.

River levels remain manageable, posing less risk for flooding. This soaking rain may alleviate the drought conditions that have been affecting the region since last fall. Farmers and gardeners are likely to benefit from the anticipated precipitation.

In urban areas, pollen levels have been troublesome, but the incoming rain may help clear the air. Residents are advised to prepare for the gloomy weather ahead by securing umbrellas and rain gear.

Meanwhile, in MEMPHIS, Tenn., scattered showers are expected throughout the weekend, particularly to the northeast of Shelby County. The National Weather Service has indicated that while thunderstorms are possible, severe weather is not expected. Expect temperatures in the upper 60s today before a mix of sun and clouds develops.
