Wichita Flooding Severe Weather

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Severe thunderstorms have caused heavy flooding on streets and roadways in and around Wichita on Tuesday afternoon. Governor Laura Kelly announced a verbal state of disaster emergency due to the extreme weather conditions.

The declaration allows for the use of state resources to assist in managing the situation. “Flood waters can be deceptive; and it only takes 18 inches of water to float a car,” said Governor Kelly. She advised travelers in affected areas to prioritize safety and remember, ‘Turn around, don’t drown.’

The Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) has activated the State Emergency Operations Center in Topeka to monitor flood activity and assist counties with resources. Reports indicate multiple road closures and evacuations occurring throughout the region.

As of 4:57 PM, local officials have reported significant disruptions. Floodwaters continue to rise following heavy rains, with areas experiencing up to 5 inches of rain. Butler County has reported various locations affected, while Sedgwick County reported multiple flooded streets, also advising caution to drivers.

Chairman Ryan Baty of the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners declared a State of Local Disaster Emergency, accessing additional resources for assistance. In response to conditions, residents in flood-prone areas are urged to avoid flooded streets and stay indoors.

By 4:00 PM, the City of Wichita announced the Arkansas River was officially closed due to flooding. Local law enforcement is warning citizens to avoid driving through standing water.

As the situation develops, residents are encouraged to stay informed about ongoing conditions, and officials are monitoring areas at risk of further flooding.
