Severe Weather Forces School Closures Across Central North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Heavy snowfall, sleet, and freezing rain have prompted widespread school closures and delays across central North Carolina for Thursday, February 20, 2025. The inclement weather, which began affecting the region on Wednesday, has raised safety concerns.
All Wake County public schools will be closed Thursday, with the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) announcing that students will have a makeup day on May 2. In addition, all athletic events and after-school programs have been canceled.
Meanwhile, Durham Public Schools opted for an asynchronous remote learning day, closing all facilities and canceling athletic events and after-school activities. Other districts, including Orange County Schools, Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools, and Chatham County Schools, will also transition to remote learning for Thursday.
Cumberland County Schools have announced that students will engage in remote learning, while school employees will work from home. Similarly, Warren County Schools, Moore County Schools, and Halifax County Schools will implement remote learning.
Due to the severe weather, numerous municipalities across the area are also closing offices or limiting services on Thursday. Local officials urge residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm.
For businesses and organizations wishing to report closures or delays, ABC11 has updated its reporting system. Organizations should use the online system with their existing ID codes, as the previous phone system is no longer operational. To register an organization with ABC11, managers may send relevant information to [email protected].
As the severe weather continues, residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for rapidly changing conditions.
