Severe Weather Prompts Schedule Changes for Schools in Baton Rouge Area

BATON ROUGE, La. — Severe weather is forcing at least one school district in the Baton Rouge area to adjust its schedule due to heavy rainfall and severe weather forecasts. The Baton Rouge district will announce specific changes, joining several other districts across Central Texas that have already modified their Friday schedules.
The KVUE viewing area faces severe weather risks on Friday, with large hail and strong winds being primary concerns. Isolated tornadoes are also possible, prompting schools to take precautionary measures.
In the Austin area, multiple school districts have canceled after-school activities to ensure student safety. For instance, Austin Independent School District has canceled all districtwide after-school activities, including sports and additional events.
Several local districts are releasing their elementary students early, including Hutto Independent School District, which has announced a modified early release schedule. Elementary schools will dismiss at 1:30 p.m., while middle schools and high schools will follow at later times.
“Safety is our top priority,” a district spokesperson said. “Parents are encouraged to pick up their children as early as possible.”
The district also noted that dismissal will occur at the regular time, but families are welcome to pick their children up early if they choose. In addition to school dismissals, outdoor after-school activities have also been canceled to avoid travel during severe weather conditions.
As conditions remain unpredictable, officials advise parents to stay updated on school communications and check for any further announcements regarding schedule changes. This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
