Severe Weather Threat Expands Across Eastern U.S. as Storm System Moves In

ROANOKE, Va. – A powerful storm system moving eastward is set to impact millions along the East Coast today. The severe weather threat, which includes gusty winds and the potential for tornadoes, will begin affecting areas in Virginia and North Carolina this morning.

The National Weather Service has issued tornado watches and severe thunderstorm warnings across multiple states, affecting over 63 million people. According to meteorologists, the primary risks include damaging wind gusts up to 75 mph, hail, and isolated tornadoes.

At approximately 10 a.m., areas including the Roanoke Valley and Lynchburg will experience the worst of the rough weather, as the main line of storms intensifies. Meteorologist Stephen Morgan from FOX Weather noted, “The winds will be the biggest threat today. If you have outdoor items that are easily blown away, secure them now.” He indicated that the system’s winds at nearly 5,000 feet could reach between 60 and 80 mph, raising concerns about potential property damage.

As the system moves eastward, it is expected to affect cities along the Interstate 95 corridor, extending from Richmond, Va., to Raleigh, N.C. By noon, the severe threat should begin to diminish for most areas, although higher gusts may persist through the afternoon.

The storm system, which has already caused damage in parts of the South, may cause flash flooding in low-lying areas where heavy rain occurs. Preliminary reports from Union County, N.C., indicate possible tornado touchdowns and property damage in the Porter Ridge area.

In addition to the tornado threat, the National Weather Service has warned that localized flash flooding and non-thunderstorm wind gusts could impact much of the Northeast later today. These conditions are compounded by the instability brought on by the warming temperatures as the day progresses.

By evening, the storm activity is expected to weaken significantly, leading to a less severe weather outlook late tonight. Residents are advised to stay informed and prepare their safety measures, including knowing how to access alerts and seek shelter in the event of severe weather warnings.
