Mid South Severe Weather Forecast April 2025

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WTVD) — A Level 2 out of 5 threat for severe storms is expected to hit the Mid-South Thursday evening, prompting local officials to urge residents to prepare.

The National Weather Service warns that the storms will arrive after a cool, cloudy start to the day, with afternoon temperatures forecast to rise into the mid-70s. Rain chances stand at 40%, with the potential for damaging wind gusts and hail.

“These storms could produce strong winds and localized hail as they move through the area,” said Meteorologist Rachel Coulter. “Residents should stay tuned to local alerts and plan for possible disruptions.”

The upcoming weather is anticipated to disrupt weekend activities as schools across the Mid-South, including those in Memphis, have postponed events such as proms due to severe weather warnings.

Officials are particularly concerned about the Mississippi River, which is currently facing minor flooding. At 8:00 PM CDT Wednesday, the river level stood at 31.7 feet and is expected to crest at 36.0 feet by Monday morning. Flooding impacts could affect roads and parks along the riverside.

The flood warning covers Memphis and surrounding areas, with advisories urging motorists not to attempt driving through barricades or flooded areas.

Shifting gears to the Carolinas, a cold front is generating rain and thunderstorms as well. While today’s weather may bring challenges to those in Memphis, communities in North Carolina are advised to prepare for potential frost as temperatures may dip near freezing late this week.

“Isolated strong to severe storms are possible today, particularly in our central and southeastern counties,” noted a local meteorologist. “The primary concerns are damaging winds and brief tornadoes.”

Residents should also expect cooler highs in the 60s as the weekend approaches, along with the possibility of another round of rain and storms heading into Friday.

As temperatures fluctuate and weather patterns shift, local weather agencies recommend staying informed through mobile alerts and trusted weather sources to ensure safety against potential impacts from this unpredictable weather.
