Shedeur Sanders Selected by Browns in Shocking Draft Slide

GREEN BAY, Wis. — The 2025 NFL Draft reached its final rounds today, concluding with an unexpected selection that stunned many. Shedeur Sanders, a quarterback from Colorado, was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall pick in the fifth round.
Sanders, once projected as a potential first-round pick, experienced a shocking slide down the draft board. Despite a stellar college career where he threw for over 4,000 yards and set numerous records, skepticism regarding his performance led to concerns among teams.
“We’ll find out more about the truth behind his slide, but Sanders was a top-tier quarterback on many boards,” said NFL analyst Dane Brugler. “His skill set suggests he can start in Year 1.”
With this selection, Sanders joins a quarterback room that includes veteran Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel. The Browns traded up to acquire Sanders, passing on him multiple times earlier in the draft. They swapped picks with the Seattle Seahawks to secure the right to select him.
Sanders’ fall has been a topic of discussion throughout the draft. He was previously expected to be drafted well before the fifth round, with many insiders predicting his name would be called far sooner. “It’s tough to watch a guy fall that far; it’s not easy for anyone,” noted NFL columnist Jarrett Bell.
As Sanders moves to Cleveland, he aims to prove his critics wrong and make an immediate impact in the league. “I’m happy to be here and excited for this opportunity,” Sanders said shortly after being drafted. His performance in training camp will determine how quickly he can earn starting status.
With Sanders on board, the Browns have added depth to their quarterback position as they seek to improve from a turbulent previous season.
