Lando Norris, representing McLaren, has expressed confidence in his team’s current Formula 1 season as the championship heads into the United States Grand Prix. Despite trailing the championship leader Max Verstappen by 52 points, Norris maintains that the team can deem the 2024 season a success regardless of the final outcome against Red Bull’s leading driver. This weekend marks the first of the last six races, with a pivotal Sprint race intensifying the competition further.

Norris, who emerged victorious in the Singapore Grand Prix four weeks ago with Verstappen finishing in second, commented on the challenges of competing against Verstappen: “We’re fighting against the best of the best but no matter what it has still been a successful season.” The 52-point gap, reduced from 78 points after the Belgian Grand Prix, reflects Norris’s ongoing efforts to equalize the standing with the reigning champion. He anticipates the remaining races will be crucial for both contenders.

Max Verstappen, seeking his fourth consecutive world title, acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the remaining fixtures. “It’s 50-50 – yes or no. There is a lot that can go well or go wrong in these six races,” Verstappen stated, emphasizing the high stakes and critical nature of each upcoming race weekend.

Norris noted a significant shift in McLaren’s approach and confidence following his maiden F1 victory in Miami earlier this year, describing how the team’s focus sharpened after regrettable performances at circuits like Silverstone. He admitted: “There are races we kind of regret not winning, probably Silverstone being the main one.”

Across the Constructors’ Championship, McLaren currently leads Red Bull by 41 points and aims to secure the title for the first time since 1998. Red Bull, on the other hand, has been working to rectify development missteps that surfaced last season, as described by Christian Horner, Red Bull’s team principal. He shared insights into their strategy post-Singapore, highlighting imperative decisions for Austin.

This weekend’s event at the Circuit of The Americas in Austin not only hosts crucial championship battles but also marks a Sprint weekend, introducing additional points. As emphasized by Andrea Stella of McLaren, “the constructors’ [championship] is more in our hands.” The strategic format of the Sprint race offers up to eight points for the winner, potentially narrowing Norris’s deficit.

Crucially, Red Bull and McLaren must remain vigilant about strategic decisions and the performance of their secondary drivers, Oscar Piastri and Sergio Perez, both of whom play pivotal roles in influencing the race outcomes in favor of their primary drivers.

As the season nears its climax, the title battle is reminiscent of previous suspenseful championship showdowns. With six rounds to unfold, each decision on track and in the pit lane can dramatically alter the championship trajectory, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the F1 2024 season in Abu Dhabi.
