Sidney Crosby Sets Records As One Of The Best Matinee Scorers In Nhl History

Sidney Crosby continues to make waves in the record books this season. Last week, the Pittsburgh Penguins captain surpassed Mike Bossy on the NHL‘s all-time scoring list with his 574th career goal. Now, he has added two more goals to his tally in a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Kraken.

What makes this feat even more impressive is that both goals came during a matinee game, thanks to the forced 1 p.m. ET start time due to the Steelers‘ schedule. Crosby’s even-strength strike and empty netter were his 75th and 76th goals in his career during day games, according to the Penguins PR. He also has 112 assists, bringing his total points in matinee games to 188.

With an average of 1.31 points per day game, Crosby leads all active players in this category and solidifies his position among the best matinee scorers in NHL history. The only players with higher production rates in day games are Mario Lemieux (1.56 ppg), Cam Neely (1.44 ppg), Wayne Gretzky (1.41 ppg), and Pavel Bure (1.35 ppg), as reported by Pens PR.

But this record-breaking performance is not surprising for Crosby. Fans will have another opportunity to witness his skills in an afternoon game on February 25 at the PPG Paints Arena. With a 3:30 p.m. start, the game will be against his favorite opponent, the Philadelphia Flyers. Crosby has amassed 125 points (54 goals, 71 assists) in 86 career games against the Flyers, making this upcoming matchup in a matinee game at home a perfect setting for him to shine.

As Crosby continues to make history on the ice, Penguins fans can eagerly anticipate more memorable performances from their captain in matinee games.
