Simon Yates Wins the 2025 Giro d’Italia in Dramatic Finish

SESTRIERE, Italy — Simon Yates clinched victory in the 2025 Giro d'Italia after a remarkable performance in the penultimate stage on May 31. Yates finished the challenging race on the Colle delle Finestre and ascended to the top of the general classification, edging out Isaac Del Toro and Richard Carapaz.
Yates, of the Visma Lease-a-bike team, attacked with 38 kilometers to go, leaving Del Toro and Carapaz behind. The Brit had learned from his disappointing experience in 2018 when he lost the green jersey in a similar situation. This time, he earned a commanding 5 minutes and 13 seconds ahead of Del Toro, who finished second.
Chris Harper took the stage victory, crossing the line first at Sestriere, but Yates’s achievement overshadowed his win. “I knew today’s stage was critical and I had to push myself,” said Yates. “It feels unreal to finally get this win.”
Del Toro expressed mixed emotions about his second-place finish. “I’m happy to be here, but it’s tough to lose the pink jersey in the final stretch,” he said. “I have a lot to learn, but today was a big step for me.”
Carapaz, who finished third in the general, acknowledged Yates’s superior strategy during the stage. “He played it smart today. Sometimes it’s not just about who is the strongest,” Carapaz remarked.
With Yates now the wearer of the Maglia Rosa, the final stage in Rome looks to be a celebration of his hard-earned victory. The quick finale through the city streets will mark the end of an intense three-week competition, featuring high stakes and relentless competition among the world’s best cyclists.
As the race concluded, Yates reflected on his journey: “This has been a tough battle, but it’s all worth it now. Thank you to my team and all the supporters.”
