Siniakova and Townsend Triumph in Australian Open Women’s Doubles Final
MELBOURNE, Australia — No. 1 seeds Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend clinched the women’s doubles title at the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, defeating No. 3 seeds Hsieh Su-Wei and Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 in a thrilling final on Rod Laver Arena. The match lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes, showcasing the resilience and skill of the top-seeded pair.
“I’m happy with the way that we fought mentally and were able to overcome those tough moments,” Townsend said during the champions’ press conference. The victory marked their second Grand Slam title together, following their win at Wimbledon last year.
Siniakova, a Czech doubles specialist, now boasts 10 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, becoming the first player to reach that milestone since Martina Hingis in 2015. “It’s really nice that you guys are still saying it and remembering it,” Siniakova said. “I’m just a professional athlete working hard and trying to achieve more.”
For Townsend, the win was particularly poignant. This was her first match on Rod Laver Arena since winning the Junior Australian Open title in 2012. “Being able to step back on the court brought back memories of being that little girl with braces and bows in her hair,” she reflected. “It was really special.”
The duo, who have only been a regular pairing for eight months, have quickly risen to the top of the doubles hierarchy. They have now won 15 of their 16 matches in Grand Slam events as a team, including last year’s Wimbledon title and a semifinal appearance at the 2024 US Open.
The final was a hard-fought battle. Siniakova and Townsend dominated the first set, breaking their opponents in all four service games. However, Hsieh and Ostapenko mounted a comeback in the second set, forcing a tiebreak and eventually winning it 7-4. The third set saw Siniakova struggle with three double faults in the opening game, but the pair quickly regained their composure. Townsend’s exceptional volleying helped secure the decisive break, and Siniakova served out the match to seal their victory.
Hsieh, a former WTA Doubles World No. 1, was defending her 2024 Australian Open title, while Ostapenko was aiming for her second consecutive Slam win after triumphing at the 2024 US Open. Despite their efforts, they could not overcome the top seeds’ determination.
With this win, Siniakova adds a third Australian Open title to her collection, having previously won in 2022 and 2023 with Barbora Krejcikova. Townsend, meanwhile, continues her impressive comeback from maternity leave in 2022, now holding eight career WTA doubles titles, two of which are Grand Slam victories.
“I look at it as a part of history,” Townsend said of her partnership with Siniakova. “To be on the same side as someone as decorated as her is an honor. I’ll be happy to continue racking up those Slams with her.”
