Sky Sports Host Mocks Eric Dier’s Accent After Bayern Munich Debut
Sky Sports host Simon Thomas has hilariously poked fun at Eric Dier‘s accent during an interview on German TV following his debut for Bayern Munich. Dier, who is currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, made his first appearance for the German giants in a 1-0 victory over Union Berlin. After the game, he faced the media and his accent drew comparisons to Steve McClaren’s infamous attempt to imitate a Dutch accent during his time as England’s assistant manager.
Simon Thomas, the host of Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports, took to Twitter to mock Dier’s accent, calling it ‘terrible.’ However, fans were quick to defend the defender’s linguistic abilities, reminding Thomas that Dier is multi-lingual, speaking English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German.
Dier’s accent can be attributed to his background. Born in Cheltenham, England, he grew up in Portugal and even played for Sporting Lisbon before joining Tottenham in 2014. This explains his ability to speak several languages fluently, which was also captured in Tottenham’s All or Nothing documentary on Amazon Prime, where he spoke in Portuguese to manager Jose Mourinho.
Dier’s interview after the game was filled with pride and happiness as he expressed his joy at making his debut for Bayern Munich. He praised the club and its fans and hoped to continue contributing to the team’s success. While some fans found humor in Dier’s quick assimilation of a German accent, others defended him, stating that it was his normal voice due to his upbringing in Portugal.
This incident is another example of how British media tends to make light of anyone who attempts speaking in an accent of another language, similar to when Joey Barton adopted a French accent during his time at Marseille. However, it is important to recognize Dier’s linguistic abilities and appreciate his efforts to communicate in multiple languages.
