Dayton, Ohio — WWE SmackDown hosts a dramatic episode tonight, May 9, 2025, at the Nutter Center, just before the highly anticipated Backlash event. Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena will address his looming title clash against Randy Orton, while Jade Cargill faces Nia Jax to become the top contender for the WWE Women’s Championship.

The show airs at 8 PM EST on the USA Network and will feature a tag team match between LA Knight and Damian Priest against Jacob Fatu and Solo Sikoa from The Bloodline, leading into their fatal four-way match for the United States Championship on Saturday.

“This week’s SmackDown is essential for the superstars to gain momentum going into Backlash,” said WWE sources. “Each match could significantly shake up the title pictures in both the men’s and women’s divisions.”

John Cena, who is preparing to defend his Undisputed Championship, suffered a surprising setback two weeks ago on SmackDown when he was dropped by Orton with an RKO.

“I need to make a statement tonight,” Cena said earlier this week. “Orton may think he has the upper hand, but I’m ready to fight back.”

Meanwhile, the women’s title landscape has become increasingly competitive. Cargill and Jax will square off to see who gets the chance to challenge current champion Tiffany Stratton. Their previous encounter ended in controversy after Naomi intervened.

“This is my chance to prove that I belong at the top,” said Cargill. “Nia is tough, but I’m ready.”

In addition, SmackDown will showcase several prominent WWE stars expected to appear, including the Tag Team Champions, The Street Profits, and rising talents like Rey Fenix.

With everyone looking to gain an edge before Backlash, tonight’s matches promise to be filled with intense action as the WWE Championship titles hang in the balance.
