Snow Blankets Saks, Alabama, Creating Winter Wonderland
Residents of Saks, Alabama, woke up to a rare winter wonderland Friday morning as snow blanketed the small town. The snowfall, which began overnight, transformed the area into a picturesque scene, with children playing in the snow and local roads covered in a thin layer of white.
Bill Wilson, a photographer for The Anniston Star, captured the serene moments as families ventured out to enjoy the snow. Among the scenes were brothers John Nelson, 6, and Timothy Nelson, 10, playfully throwing snow at each other. “It’s not every day we get snow like this,” said their mother, who watched from the porch. “The kids are having a blast.”
Local authorities, including the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), worked to clear major roads like U.S. 431 and Saks Road. An ALDOT motor grader was spotted clearing snow, ensuring safe passage for drivers. Despite the snow, traffic remained light as many residents opted to stay indoors.
The snowfall also brought a touch of humor, as a goat in a nearby field seemed unimpressed by the winter weather. “That goat couldn’t care less about the snow,” Wilson remarked. “It just stood there, chewing on some hay like it was any other day.”
While the snow was a welcome sight for many, it also served as a reminder of the challenges winter weather can bring. “We’re not used to this kind of weather,” said one resident. “But it’s beautiful while it lasts.”
By midday, temperatures began to rise, and the snow started to melt, leaving behind slushy roads and happy memories for the residents of Saks.
