Snow White Live Action Movie Premiere

BURBANK, Calif. — Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White, starring Rachel Zegler, has experienced a surprising turnaround since its disappointing box office release. The film opened in U.S. theaters on March 21, 2025, but struggled with an approval rating of only 39% from critics, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite making about $205 million globally, this figure fell short of its substantial production budget of $240 to $270 million. Issues surrounding the movie included criticisms over its motion-capture depiction of the Seven Dwarfs and public backlash against lead actors Zegler and Gal Gadot, who portrayed the Evil Queen, due to their political statements.

Following a less-than-ideal debut, Snow White found a second chance when it premiered on Disney+ on June 11, 2025. The film quickly climbed to the top of the streaming platform, outperforming other titles, including the 2002 animated classic Lilo & Stitch and the new MCU release, Captain America: Brave New World.

Director Marc Webb’s adaptation of the beloved 1937 animated film has been praised by audiences, garnering a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Many fans appreciate the film’s memorable songs and its fresh take on the classic story.

The cast also features Andrew Burnap as Jonathan and Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman. Notably, the film includes voice performances from Jeremy Swift, Martin Klebba, and George Salazar as the iconic dwarfs.

Tamal Kundu, an entertainment writer at Evolve Media, noted the contrast between Snow White’s box office failure and its newfound streaming success. Early reviews certainly impacted its initial release, but the increased accessibility on Disney+ appears to encourage greater viewership.

With an estimated production and marketing budget around $400 million, Snow White’s initial earnings are concerning for Disney. However, the positive reception on streaming may pave the way for its longevity in the eyes of fans.

As Disney continues to navigate its mixed reception to live-action remakes, the tale of Snow White illustrates the unpredictable nature of film, particularly how audience reception can change over time.
