Snowstorm Shuts Down Metro Vancouver Schools, Bringing Joy To Kids And Chaos To Working Parents

Jan. 17, 2024 – A massive snowstorm has paralyzed Metro Vancouver today, resulting in school closures that brought joy to kids eager to enjoy a day of snowy fun, but chaos to working parents scrambling to find last-minute childcare.

The winter storm has forced several school districts and post-secondary institutions in the region to suspend operations, prioritizing safety amid treacherous road conditions and heavy snowfall.

Abbotsford Schools, Chilliwack Sch.Dist., Langley School District, New Westminster Schools, and West Vancouver Schools have all announced the closure of their public schools.

Students and staff across Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Langley, New Westminster, and West Vancouver are getting an unexpected snow day, with schools remaining closed for the day. Daycares, pre-schools, and all community use of school facilities have also been suspended in these districts.

Vancouver College, a prestigious Catholic school in the region, has also declared a closure for Jan. 17 due to the harsh weather conditions. No classes will be held, allowing students to take advantage of the snowy weather.

Post-secondary institutions have also been impacted by the snowstorm. The British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has closed all campuses and canceled in-person classes and exams. Online classes and work will proceed as scheduled.

Other institutions that have announced closures include Capilano University, Kwantlen University, Langara College, Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, and Vancouver Community College.

The closure of schools and post-secondary institutions has caused disruption and challenges for working parents who need to make alternative childcare arrangements on short notice. While snow days are rare in Metro Vancouver, they can create unexpected hurdles for families.

As the snowfall continues throughout the day, it is important for residents to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel. Road conditions are hazardous, and authorities are urging people to exercise caution if they must venture outside. School districts and institutions will provide updates on when operations can safely resume.
