Sonic the Hedgehog Franchise Surpasses $1 Billion at Global Box Office
Paramount Pictures has announced that the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise has surpassed $1 billion in global box office earnings. The franchise, based on Sega‘s iconic video game series, began with its first film in February 2020 and has since expanded with two sequels, a TV spin-off series, and a cameo appearance in Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
The original Sonic the Hedgehog movie grossed over $319 million worldwide, while its 2022 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, earned over $405 million. The third installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, released in December 2024, has contributed $336 million to the franchise’s total earnings so far, according to Box Office Mojo.
“The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has become an unstoppable cultural force with limitless potential,” said Paramount Pictures President and CEO Brian Robbins in a press release. “As each chapter of Sonic’s adventures continues to raise the bar, we’re incredibly proud and excited to continue delivering stories and characters that resonate with audiences around the world.”
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Shadow the Hedgehog, a fan-favorite character from the games, alongside returning stars Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. Jim Carrey reprised his role as the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik, though the actor has hinted that future appearances may depend on his interest in the role.
The franchise’s success places it alongside other video game adaptations like The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $1.36 billion, and the Resident Evil series, which grossed $1.2 billion globally. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release on Blu-ray later this year, with preorders available for a limited edition 4K steelbook.
