Sophia Wilson Michael Wilson Pregnancy Announcement Ultrasound

PORTLAND, Ore. — U.S. women's national team striker and Portland Thorns FC forward Sophia Wilson, formerly known as Smith, announced Wednesday that she and her husband, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson, are expecting their first child. The couple shared the news on Instagram, captioning their post, “Life just keeps getting sweeter.”

The announcement included photos of the parents-to-be holding ultrasound images, celebrating a significant milestone in their lives just months after their wedding in January. The couple met at Stanford University, where both excelled in their respective sports—Wilson in soccer and Michael in football.

Wilson’s announcement comes as she has been absent from both U.S. women’s national team training camps and preseason activities for the Thorns. According to a Thorns spokesperson, she is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2025 NWSL season.

“We are overjoyed to share that @sophiawilson and her husband Michael are expecting their first child!” the Thorns posted on social media. “The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter.”

In an earlier interview, Wilson expressed her eagerness to join the ranks of U.S. players who also navigate motherhood. “I feel like, aside from soccer, that’s what I feel is my calling, to be a mom,” she said. “My career has to stop for a period of time when I am pregnant, so that’s not something we can just let happen at any moment. [But] we’ve been patient for a long time.”

Wilson, 24, has an impressive career history, having been named the NWSL MVP in 2022 when she led the Thorns to the league title. In addition, she was recognized as the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year that same year and played a crucial role in the U.S. national team’s gold medal win at the 2024 Olympics.

As she prepares for her expanding family, Wilson’s absence from the upcoming season will be felt by the Thorns. The team must navigate the 2025 season without her and address deeper roster concerns as multiple players are already out due to injuries.

The Thorns acknowledged Wilson’s contributions by sharing their excitement for her new journey while reinforcing their commitment to support her during this time. Wilson’s announcement underscores a blend of personal and professional changes as she looks forward to motherhood while maintaining her successful athletic career.
