Winter Storm South Carolina School Closures

Several school districts in South Carolina are adjusting schedules and canceling activities as winter storm watches take effect across the Midlands region. Greenville County Schools announced the cancellation of all field trips, athletic events, and activities scheduled for Friday and Saturday to ensure buses are available for potential early dismissals.

Officials stated that a decision regarding Friday’s school schedule will be made closer to the expected weather event. “This delay allows the district to formulate a plan that optimizes student learning while minimizing the burden on parents who need childcare,” a district spokesperson said. The district aims to announce its decision before Thursday’s dismissal.

In Calhoun County, all after-school activities, aftercare programs, and sporting events for Friday, January 10, have been canceled. A basketball game originally scheduled for Friday has been moved to Thursday, January 9. Similarly, Lexington Two has canceled all after-school activities, including athletic events, practices, and extracurricular programs, for Friday. Some athletic events have been rescheduled for Thursday.

Richland Two has also rescheduled all Friday night athletic events to Thursday night. However, there are no changes to the school day schedule for Friday, and after-school care programs will operate as usual. School officials across the region are urging parents to stay updated as conditions evolve.

Winter storm watches are in effect for several Midlands counties, with forecasts predicting significant winter weather later in the week. Residents are advised to monitor local updates and prepare for potential disruptions.
