Southern California Windstorm Wildfires 2025

A powerful windstorm described as potentially destructive and life-threatening is sweeping across Southern California, significantly increasing the risk of wildfires. The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings for multiple areas, including the Malibu coast, Santa Monica Mountains, and San Gabriel Valley, with winds expected to peak at 80 mph and isolated gusts potentially exceeding 100 mph in mountainous regions.

Firefighters are battling multiple blazes, including the Eaton Fire near Altadena, which has scorched over 2,200 acres and remains 0% contained. The fire has destroyed structures, including an assisted living facility, and forced widespread evacuations. “Residents in affected zones should evacuate immediately,” urged the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. An evacuation center has been established at the Pasadena Convention Center.

Another fire, the Tyler Fire, broke out in Riverside County, burning at least 15 acres. Meanwhile, the Hurst Fire in Sylmar and a blaze in Pacific Palisades have further strained emergency resources. Over 52,000 residents and 20,000 structures are under mandatory evacuation orders, with nearly 47,000 more under warnings.

Zion Brown, an employee at The Terraces at Park Marino in Altadena, described the harrowing evacuation process. “The fire started coming down the mountain, moving quickly. We evacuated everyone, carrying people down from the upper floors. We got everyone out before the building caught fire,” he said.

Officials urge residents to stay informed through official channels like Genasys Protect and to have evacuation plans ready. The red flag warnings are expected to remain in effect until Thursday evening as the region braces for continued high winds and fire danger.
