Spain Weather Storms Dana May 2025

Madrid, Spain – A chaotic weather pattern is set to bring heavy rain, storms, and cooler temperatures across Spain this week, meteorologists say. Experts describe the upcoming conditions as a “dance of DANAs,” which refers to cold air pockets at high altitudes colliding over the country.

This unusual weather pattern is caused by a blockage over the UK, pulling unstable systems toward the Iberian Peninsula. The state weather agency, AEMET, has already warned of significant disruptions.

On Tuesday, residents in the northern regions, particularly Navarra, La Rioja, and the Pyrenees, should expect strong downpours. Rainfall could exceed 30 liters per square meter within an hour, alongside gusty winds and the possibility of hail.

In other parts of the country, like the Balearic Islands and southern Spain, the weather will begin calmer but clouds will increase throughout the day, leading to some isolated showers. In the northern mountains, snowfall is expected at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters.

Temperatures are projected to remain below normal, especially in Lugo, León, and Oviedo, where highs may not reach above 16-18°C. By contrast, Madrid could see temperatures around 20°C, while Seville may reach up to 27°C.

Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be the peak of the unstable weather, with multiple DANAs overlapping across the country. Heavy rain and localized hailstorms may impact various regions, prompting alerts for the Balearics and much of the Peninsula.

While some areas, like Andalusia and Extremadura, may experience lighter conditions, no region will be entirely unaffected. Nights could become slightly warmer due to increased cloud cover, with Madrid possibly dipping to 18°C and cities like Barcelona, Valencia, and Castellón around 25°C.

Looking ahead to Friday, forecasters anticipate partially settled conditions with returning sunshine in some areas. However, scattered showers may linger in northern and eastern regions.

Temperatures are expected to rise, particularly in central and southern Spain, where they may finally begin to feel more like typical mid-May weather, reaching 30-32°C in the Guadalquivir Valley.

While conditions improve slightly, meteorologists warn that another DANA system could emerge over the Atlantic by Sunday, potentially creating further instability to kick off next week. For now, officials advise residents and travelers alike to stay updated on changing weather conditions as travel plans and safety could be impacted significantly.
